There are two types of past simple verb form - regular verbs and irregular verbs.
- Regular Verbs end in -ed with various spellings depending on the individual verb.
- We add -ed to most verbs to form the regular verb form.
- need - needed
- watch - watched
- kiss - kissed
- rest - rested
- look - looked
- cook - cooked
- fetch - fetched
- point - pointed
- form - formed
- sponsor - sponsored
- But, if the verb contains -e, just add -d.
- chase - chased
- base - based
- bake - baked
- blame - blamed
- care - cared
- race - raced
- waste - wasted
- note - noted
- hope - hoped
- slice - sliced
- For verbs ending in a form of [consonant + y], we replace the "y" with "i", then add -ed.
- study - studied
- hurry - hurried
- vary - varied
- apply - applied
- carry - carried
- query - queried
- marry - married
- dry - dried
- cry - cried
- pry - pried
- try - tried
- copy - copied
- deny - denied
- tidy - tidied
- excite - excited
- But, if the verb ends in [vowel + y], we don't replace the "y", instead, just add -ed
- play - played
- stay - stayed
- fray - frayed
- enjoy - enjoyed
- obey - obeyed
- annoy - annoyed
- deploy - deployed
- employ - employed
- destroy - destroyed
- stray - strayed
- If the verb ends in [consonant + one vowel + one consonant], we double the last consonant, then add -ed.
- stop - stopped
- mop - mopped
- ban - banned
- trap - trapped
- sip - sipped
- swap - swapped
- whip - whipped
- pin - pinned
- slip - slipped
- hop - hopped
- We also double the last consonant for some two-syllable verbs when the stress is on the last syllable.
- refer - referred
- prefer - preferred
- compel - compelled
- confer - conferred
- Irregular verbs have various forms. There are no rules on the spelling of irregular verbs. Learners have to memorize the irregular past forms by themselves. You can find the past form of irregular verbs in the dictionary or at the end of your English course book
